This FRED Introductory Tutorial training class is a 3 day (with optional 4th day) tutorial intended to provide new users with a comprehensive understanding of how to use FRED to create a variety of optical models and perform calculations. Note this course is offered both In-Person and Online.
For new or infrequent FRED users
Assumes no prior knowledge of using FRED
Learn how to use FRED for a variety of applications
Become a competent user quickly
Optional 4th day for Scripting
FRED license will be provided for the class duration
Attendees receive a printed copy of the lecture notes
Certificate is provided upon course completion
Introduction to FRED and its Graphical User Interface
Maksutov Telescope- Get comfortable with the interface and perform basic ray tracing and imaging analysis
DLP Integrator – Further practice with the interface, learn about setting source spectra and non-imaging analyses using both analysis surfaces and detector entities
Charts Discussion – Learn about customizing the look and feel of analysis plots
Interferometer – Get exposed to coherent field propagation by modeling an interferometer, including learning about using sub-assemblies and defining coatings
LED and Hybrid TIR Lens – Build geometry using curves and construct an LED model from rayfile data or datasheets
Ray Trace Properties Discussion – Learn about the important role of Raytrace Properties in your models
Apertures and Trimming – Understand how surface and curve trimming operations can be used to create custom objects by building an imaging prism
Materials Discussion – Learn how FRED keeps track of materials assignments during raytracing
Coherence Discussion – Get insight into the algorithm that FRED uses when propagating coherent fields
Laser Diode Collimator – Use coherent field propagation, polarization, and birefringence to construct a beam combining system with a lens imported from a lens design file
Raypath Discussion – What exactly is a “raypath”?
Triplet – Perform a ghost stray light analysis on an imported lens system and practice using the raytrace path analysis tools
Barcode Scanner – Introduction to CAD import, and scattering though construction of a barcode scanning system
Scatter and Stray Light – Learn about BSDF representations and scatter modeling by building a refractive telescope model
Our in-person classes benefit from being held in a small group setting which allows interaction and real-time support between students and instructor. We recommend in-person attendance where possible for this reason, as we feel students gain a lot more from live interactive classes!
However, for those who can’t travel to us Photon Engineering is now offering an online, on-demand version of our FRED introductory tutorial class! This tutorial is a self-paced and on-demand class that will provide students with a deep understanding of FRED optical engineering software in a convenient and effective way. This online tutorial is built around a hands-on learning experience and students will be provided with nearly 20 hours of pre-recorded lectures and demonstrations to enhance their learning experience.
• $2,350 per student registration for the 3-day session
