CAD Capability

FRED imports and exports CAD models using both the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES) and STEP AP203 and 214 formats. CAD files imported into FRED can be shown in either wireframe or solid model views. The complete set of information for each surface and curve defining geometry is maintained and it is possible to change CAD imported geometry directly in FRED using the graphical user interface (GUI). After import it is also possible to position, trim, or modify the imported geometry in the same manner as any natively created geometry. CAD geometry is imported as a set of Non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) and represented as curves and surfaces. FRED automatically takes these curves and surface and groups them into subassemblies.

The FRED CAD import dialog is shown below. The importer first scans the CAD file to be imported and outputs a summary of the number of curves, surfaces and B[rep found along with other important header information. The dialog then prompts the user with options to import geometry into a current or new window, specify surface drawing mode, Raytrace Control properties and options to reduce NURBS and simplify curve order.
