Digitizer
Very often vendors supply users with data in graphical form. This data might be transmission/reflection data from a coating measurement, emission spectra data from a source measurement, dispersion data, part drawings, etc. Converting this graphical data into numerical data with a ruler and calculator is tedious, error-prone, and time consuming at best.

In order to make this task less laborious, FRED has a built-in digitizer with which the user can retrieve the numerical data in a more direct fashion. From various places within FRED, the user opens a digitizer dialog, selects the graphic file (bmp, jpg, pcx, tga, and tif file formats are supported), marks the fiducials, and then interrogates/digitizes the graphic. (Once the fiducials are marked, FRED  indicates the cursor coordinates in both graphic and pixel formats.) Data captured by the digitizer can be exported back into FRED  or written to a disk file for later use in FRED  or other application.

Digitizing a Transmission Plot

FRED ’s digitizer may be used to digitize
Refractive index plots
Wavelength apodization plots
Reflection/transmission plots
Geometry as represented by segmented curves
