How do I position CAD models?

Postby ukoehler » Fri Jun 13, 2008 1:38 am

I'd like to import some STEP models (i.e. from LINOS Photonics) in FRED. Import works well, but I have no idea how to set the coordinate system to some "known" position in the model. I could ask our engineers to import the file in SolidDesigner, move the part corner or its center or to the origin and re-export as STEP or IGES. Is there a simple trick to do the same within FRED?

I do not have access to a full CAD Software with STEP import/export support on my desk. There is a programm "3D-Tool" which might do this for 300€. I asked them for a demo key with STEP support. Is there any other cheap/free CAD Software or conversion utility?

Thanks,
Ulrich

The best way is when you use FRED's CAD import menu, select the option to import using the Move to Import System Origin to Surface-->Move origin to surface average. This way when you drop an analysis surface onto the object it is placed correctly.

Cheap CAD converter

The product that I would recommend would be Rhino 3D by McNeel and Associates. This product is well priced and does a great CAD conversion to multiple formats, including IGES and STEP. You can even download a trial of the program at http://www.rhino3d.com/. This product, Solidworks and ProEngineer are the three products that have the best import and export to FRED of all the CAD products. Although there are several that come a close second.
